ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The JNC acknowledges the traditional custodians of the lands on which we work, the Gadigal and Bidjigal People of the Eora Nation. We pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging and acknowledge that these lands always were and always will be Aboriginal lands. We celebrate First Nations Peoples’ connection to the land and recognise the importance of Indigenous voices and culture. We would like to advise that there may be images or videos on this website of people who have since passed.

World Day of Social Justice

February 20, 2026, is internationally recognised as the World Day of Social Justice by the United Nations, promoting fair outcomes, tackling poverty and inequality. This year’s theme ‘Renewed Commitment to Social Development and Social Justice”, identifies the shared global responsibility to advance social development, eradicate poverty, expand decent work, and strengthen social protection for all.

At an international level, the UN has stressed the need for social justice to be at the core of all policymaking. At a local level, we recognise the importance that neighbourhood centres play in local, place based social development and the day-to-day experiences of people accessing support to achieve justice.

At JNC, social justice has been one of our core values since we started in 1974, and social justice principles have driven our service delivery. For over 50 years, staying driven by our passion for and commitment to social justice has sat beside our flexible and innovative approaches, enabling us to respond to a range of challenges over the years. Through this lens, we have become a key component of local social infrastructure in the communities we work with.

Our centres, both solid and mobile, continue due to collaborative partnerships, committed team members, engaged communities, and importantly, our commitment to social justice. Our work stays relevant because we listen to the local communities and work with them to create local solutions.

Every day for over 50 years, we have committed to social development and social justice, but it is important today, along with others all over the world, to renew this commitment and recognise our role in strengthening social protection for our communities.
