ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The JNC acknowledges the traditional custodians of the lands on which we work, the Gadigal and Bidjigal People of the Eora Nation. We pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging and acknowledge that these lands always were and always will be Aboriginal lands. We celebrate First Nations Peoples’ connection to the land and recognise the importance of Indigenous voices and culture. We would like to advise that there may be images or videos on this website of people who have since passed.

Neighbourhood Centre Week 2019

JNC Neighbourhood Centre Week 2019 art group painting

This week, in conjunction with other neighbourhood centres across NSW, The JNC celebrated Neighbourhood Centre Week 2019. Current research suggests that getting together with other people has a positive impact on both mental and physical health. The Neighbourhood Centre Week theme this year is ‘Bringing People Together’, something neighbourhood centres strive to do on a daily basis.

Building a dream together in Neighbourhood Centre Week 2019

It’s been great to get out in the community this week to celebrate Neighbourhood Centre Week 2019. The JNC held three events in the Randwick LGA community, in local community rooms at Namatjira, South Maroubra and South Coogee.  People came together to share food, a group art activity and conversation. The photograph shows the result of one of the group art projects: this is the South Coogee community group’s painting of their dream community space.

Tips for connecting

Connecting with others can sometimes feel stressful. The team at The JNC offers you a few tips to make it easier:

  • Listen well – ask questions and listen to the answers
  • Say people’s names when you are introduced to them and offer yours
  • Chat with someone at the bus stop and share a smile
  • Help someone – doing something little can have a big impact. For example, open the door without being asked, or assist with carrying someone’s shopping
  • Join in – attend an activity or event run by The JNC, attend a group at your local church, attend a free event at the library.

Get together through The JNC

The JNC runs activities throughout the year that enable people to get together. Want to take part in an art class for new parents? A walking group?  Tai Chi? See our noticeboard in the foyer of the Lionel Bowen Library at Maroubra Junction or check out our list of groups and classes or social support for older people.  Our Monthly Calendar gives you a quick view of what’s on too.

We’re also on Facebook on @TheJNC, and Instagram: @the_jnc.
