ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The JNC acknowledges the traditional custodians of the lands on which we work, the Gadigal and Bidjigal People of the Eora Nation. We pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging and acknowledge that these lands always were and always will be Aboriginal lands. We celebrate First Nations Peoples’ connection to the land and recognise the importance of Indigenous voices and culture. We would like to advise that there may be images or videos on this website of people who have since passed.

Celebrating JNC volunteers

Without JNC volunteers, The JNC would not exist!

45 years ago, a small group of people from the Maroubra Methodist Church came together to came together to discuss and plan the establishment of a community help group (i.e to volunteer!). Identifying a need in the community, they established CHARM (Community Help Association of Randwick Municipality) provided companionship and support services and soon realised that their valuable time could be spent providing even more solutions to community issues. One thing led to another and some years, and a few name changes later we have The JNC.

Today, volunteers are at the core of everything we do. They support us, they form our governing body, and they make things happen.  Without volunteers, there would be no English classes, walking groups, knitting groups, craft groups, computer tutoring, day trips, phone calls to isolated elderly people, shopping trips – and this is just scratching the surface of what volunteers do at The JNC.

This week, we are celebrating National Volunteer Week, a time to celebrate how volunteers are “Making a World of Difference”. The numbers have been crunched and the figures show that every dollar invested in volunteering in Australia yields a 450% return, but the real impact of volunteering cannot be measured in financial terms. The time that those volunteers donated to the community 45 years ago yielded returns that are too vast to contemplate. How can you measure the return of one good deed when it ripples out beyond the horizon?

It is impossible to say what will come of the hours generously given by our volunteers today, but if we look at what our volunteers have already made happen, it will be something very special indeed.

So this week we celebrate volunteering and thank our 100+ volunteers here at the JNC for your amazing contribution and reflect on the difference our volunteers make to the lives of so many in our local communities.

Join our JNC volunteers

We seek additional volunteer support. Do you want to join our group of JNC volunteers? Are you interested in any of these roles? Please contact us!

Would you like to assist at our weekly gentle exercise class?

We are looking for a volunteer to support our exercise class for aged clients. If you are looking for a weekly opportunity, are outgoing and enjoy supporting others this would be a perfect role for you. You would assist with the class, setting up the space and organising morning tea for participants.

Would you like to join our social outings as a volunteer?

We need volunteers to go out on our social bus trips, to support older people on and off our bus and to accompany them on our trips. If you are outgoing, friendly and have some time during the week, please get in touch!

Thursday Trio Volunteer

Our Thursday Trio trips are small group trips into the city and beyond for older people. We need a volunteer to assist on our bigger excursions, such as trips to museums, galleries or even to go fishing! This is not a regular role, and could be planned around your availability on Thursdays.
